Why Excalidraw
A hand-drawn look tells people the diagram is a sketch, open to discussion, rather than a finished design. That makes Excalidraw a natural place to take a Mermaid flowchart into a whiteboard session or a design review.
Everything stays connected
Labels are bound to their shapes and arrows are bound to the shapes they connect. Move a box and its label and arrows follow, just as if you had drawn it in Excalidraw yourself.
What this does not do
- Only flowcharts become editable shapes; other diagram types come across as one image.
- Excalidraw has three basic shapes, so cylinders, hexagons and other Mermaid shapes become rectangles or ellipses.
- Arrows are straight lines between shapes; add bends in Excalidraw if you need them.

How do I get the diagram into Excalidraw?

Excalidraw can import Mermaid. Why use this?
Excalidraw's own Mermaid import (the "Mermaid to Excalidraw" dialog) works for flowcharts too. This converter gives you a file you can keep, share or open in tools that read .excalidraw, such as the Excalidraw plugins for VS Code and Obsidian.
Which diagrams become editable?
Flowcharts become native rectangles, diamonds, ellipses and arrows, with labels bound to their shapes and arrows bound to the shapes they connect, so everything moves together. Other diagram types are added as an image.
Is my diagram sent to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser and the file is created on your machine.
